UNGER ACCEPTS POST AS PUCKMASTERS DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY OPERATIONS
Nichols College Assistant replaces Patrick Nugent who founded the business in September of 2003.
November 17, 2009
MARLBORO, MA: Effective December 1, 2009 Nick Unger will begin his role as Director of Hockey Operations at Puckmasters of Marlboro and will be responsible for all player skill development programming, facility management, and business operations. Unger replaces Patrick Nugent, who founded the business in September of 2003 and is transitioning his role to pursue a career outside hockey, but will remain involved in an advisory capacity and to run select programs.
“It has been an honor to build so many strong relationships with the talented people who have come through the doors at Puckmasters,” says Nugent. “Our business has made tremendous strides and we’ve seen our players achieve so many successes in our seven seasons of operation. I am proud to have played a very small part of their achievement and am confident that Coach Unger has the leadership and vision to continue what we’ve begun. My only regret is that I will not be able to personally say good bye and thank every Puckmasters member and coach for their patronage and support. Although my role with Puckmasters is changing, I am not leaving hockey altogether and am sure I’ll be seeing all of you around the rinks!”
Puckmasters specializes in one-on-one instruction and is recognized as one of the top hockey training options in New England. It has been featured in the Metro West Daily News, the Eagle Tribune, the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, and nearly every other hockey-specific regional publication such as Hockey Night in Boston, the New England Hockey Journal and Hockey USA.
In addition to his role as Director of Hockey Operations at Puckmasters, Coach Unger also serves as an Assistant for the Division III Nichols College Bison of the ECAC Northeast Conference. Nichols College is now known for their remarkable turnaround after 27 losing seasons, ending with the 2003-2004 season. The Bison are now nationally ranked, and won their first ever ECAC Northeast Championship in 2009 while earning a spot in their first-ever NCAA national tournament in 2009.
Prior to coming to Puckmasters, Nick was an employee of the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL), working in the public relations department in 2007 and 2008. Nick has also been employed by Rick Heinz Hockey and Goalie schools (2006-2008), as well as Goaler One Athletics (2000-2006) located in Rochester, NY.
Nick earned a Bachelor of Science and Business Administration degree from Nichols College in Sport Management in 2008. He is also currently pursuing his masters in Business Administration from Nichols College. Nick was a 3 year letter winner for the Bison, where he was recognized as a determined and knowledgeable hockey mind with immense promise. Prior to Nichols, Nick played Junior A hockey for the Buffalo Lightning (renamed Jr. Sabres in 2005) in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (renamed Ontario Junior Hockey League in 2009, OJHL).
In high school, at Brockport High in Brockport, NY, Nick was a 4 year varsity player who holds a record for save percentage over a 4 year career (.933%). Unger had a stat line of 2.13 GAA, .933%, 1 section V championship, and 1 New York State Frozen Four appearance over his 4 high school seasons. In his senior season Nick was named all state goaltender.
